Welcome to J.D. Byrider

Our founder, James DeVoe, had a goal to help people get reliable transportation, even if they were turned down elsewhere. He wanted them to be able to improve their credit score while driving a dependable car that came with a warranty that would keep them on the road. For over 25 years, we’ve held true to his original way—the family way—of doing business.

Our Mission

At J.D. Byrider, our purpose is to provide a program that exceeds our customers’ expectations and maximizes their opportunity for advancement. For us, “advancement” means that if you buy a car with us, you get the opportunity to make your life better and possibly improve your credit. You get a reliable car that will get you to work, which can be the start of getting back on your feet. Long-term, you get the chance to improve your credit because we’ll report all your on-time payments to all three major credit bureaus.

Steven E. Wedding

Chief Executive Officer

Steve has been with J.D. Byrider since September 1991. He has been president of J.D. Byrider since August 2004, and chief executive officer and a member of the Board of Directors since May 2011. He previously served as controller, vice president of financial planning, vice president of franchise operations and chief financial officer. Steve has a Bachelor of Arts (1983) from the University of the South in Sewanee, TN, and a Master of Business Administration (1985) from Emory University.

Jeffrey B. Higgins

Vice President, General Counsel, Secretary

Jeff has been with J.D. Byrider since 1991. He is a member of the American Bar Association and the Indianapolis Bar Association. A 1984 graduate of Denison University in Granville, OH, Jeff earned his Juris Doctorate degree (1987) from the Indiana University School of Law in Bloomington, IN.

Bryan Hohne

Vice President, Talent and Development

Prior to joining J.D. Byrider in the fall of 2011, Bryan worked in various field and HR leadership roles with Kohl's and JCPenney. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in marketing at Michigan State University. Bryan has also served as a Big Brother for the United Way and as treasurer and board member of the Frisco Amateur Summer Swim Team (nonprofit). Bryan is also a member of the Indianapolis Society of Human Resources Management chapter and is very involved with the Knights of Columbus.

Michael Maenhout

Chief Information Officer

Mike, who has been with J.D. Byrider since 2000, pioneered the creation of our proprietary and unparalleled Discover™ operating and accounting system. He has more than 25 years of experience in information technology management with leading companies such as Indiana Insurance, ING Bank and Liberty Mutual Insurance.

Brad N. Malott

Vice President, Controller, Treasurer

An executive of J.D. Byrider since 1994, Brad has been in his current position since 1999. He holds a Bachelor of Science in accounting from Ball State University.

Jack Humbert

Vice President, Franchise Sales

A 24-year veteran of the financial industry, Jack has 19 years of experience overseeing multiple markets for Wells Fargo & Co. Since joining J.D. Byrider in 2010, he held the position of senior franchise consultant prior to accepting the role as director of franchise sales in October 2012. Jack holds a dual degree in business and communications from the University of Pittsburgh.

Tom Welter

Vice President, Franchising

A 25-year veteran in multi-unit leadership, Tom most recently served on the executive team and as senior vice president of operations at 24 Hour Fitness. Prior to that position, he served as vice president of business logistics at KB Home, and in various senior leadership positions at PepsiCo, Yum! Brands and Avis Rent a Car.

Tom is considered an industry expert in multi-unit management processes and has written numerous articles on unit-level productivity and profitability, people capability and capacity, developmental leadership and the people continuum.

Tom is a member of the National Football League Alumni Association and NFL Charities, and is active in the Indianapolis chapter. He received his Bachelor of Science in business administration from the University of Nebraska (1988), where he graduated with honors as a CoSIDA academic all-American coached by Hall of Fame coach Dr. Tom Osborne.

DJ Sprague

Chief Marketing Officer

A graduate of the University of California at Santa Barbara and Eastern Michigan University with a masters in integrated marketing communications, DJ is an international author on marketing with over 26 years of experience in all facets of strategic online and offline marketing, advertising and PR. He has worked extensively on both the client and agency side with Toyota, Hyundai, J.D. Power and Associates, Kodak and the Utah Jazz, and owned his own agency based in Southern California.

DJ also served on the board of directors for the Honoring Heroes Foundation and taught effective advertising and media planning principles to national radio and TV groups, as well as industry associations and executive organizations.

James F. DeVoe Jr.

Member of Board of Directors

Jim earned a degree in business management (1992) from the Indiana University School of Business in Bloomington, IN. He also attended Northwood Institute in Midland, Michigan, where he received an Associate of Arts degree (1989) in automotive marketing. Jim spent many years with J.D. Byrider, serving as CEO from 2006 to 2011.

Our Founder’s Vision

James F. DeVoe, our founder, came from a family heritage of more than five decades in the car business, and he himself owned a Chevrolet-Cadillac dealership in Marion, IN. Throughout that family history, the basis of success was a distinct philosophy of customer care. That customer focus led Mr. DeVoe to see a need for a different type of used car financing than the banks were providing for customers at his traditional new car dealership.

Mr. DeVoe recognized that these working people with credit challenges were being denied by traditional banks during the nationwide recession in 1979. The prime rate had soared above 20% and unemployment and gas prices were both extremely high. Consumer finance companies had abandoned the market. That year, he put a small ad in the local paper, offering reliable used cars and an opportunity to “buy here and pay here.” As with his original dealership, his goal was to do business the right way—the family way.

The response was instant and almost overwhelming. As Mr. DeVoe became a recognized expert in this new business model, he began hosting seminars in Marion, teaching more than 700 car dealers from the United States and Canada. Auto Credit of Marion was a hit.

With his business growing, Mr. DeVoe envisioned an even broader opportunity. Across the nation, working people who had experienced financial setbacks in life were being underserved by other dealerships. Again, putting the customer first, he fashioned an answer compatible with his family’s professional philosophy:

  • Treat the customer with dignity and respect
  • Consistently deliver dependable used cars, expert servicing and affordable, on-site financing
  • And, offer it all in a friendly and professional atmosphere

With that personal commitment as a foundation, and nearly a decade of refinement, J.D. Byrider was born in 1989 with the sale of its first franchise. Since then, we’ve sold over 1 million cars over the past 25 years, all while continuing to do business the family way. Our satisfied customers around the nation prove we’re the way to go for an easy approval process and reliable vehicles, and we think that’s something Mr. DeVoe would be proud of.
