Now that spring’s approaching, it’s time to think about car maintenance again. There are four main areas you should check on your vehicle before you head out for spring break or start planning that summer road trip.
1. Air Filter
When your air filter is clogged, your fuel efficiency will be reduced. Since summer gas prices tend to be much higher, it’s time to make sure your car is as efficient as possible. Dust in the springtime air can take a toll on your air filter, so it’s a good idea to get it checked sometime this season. This is especially true if you drive on dirt or gravel roads, but city drivers should still check their filters, too.
2. Wiper Blades
We all know it’s a bad idea to try to remove snow and ice from your windshield using your wiper blades, but many of us still do it. That usually results in some pretty worn-out blades by the time spring showers roll around. Take the time to change them this season so you can be prepared to drive safely in the coming seasons.
3. HVAC System
You likely haven’t noticed any problems with your air conditioner during the winter months, but the heat of summer isn’t the time to find out you need it fixed. Turn the dial on cold on a warm spring day to make sure everything is working properly. Since it tends to be cold in the morning and hot during the day, it’s also the perfect time to make sure your heater made it out of winter okay.
The heavy snowfall and high winds of winter can knock your headlights out of alignment. In your driveway, turn your car’s lights on and step outside of the vehicle to check and make sure they’re all aligned. Walking around the car each time, turn on both sets of turn signals and your hazard lights to make sure they’re still working. Grab a friend to help you check your brake lights.
